The business opportunity I am associated with has formal recognition of leadership levels. The key to effective leadership of people who are new to an ‘organisation’ is to; remember what was what like for you when you first joined.
In How to Win Friends and Influence People, (HTWFAIP) Dale Carnegie reminds us that we probably made mistakes when we first started in any form of work. As we become experienced we tend to forget this because we have become competent. We then tend to expect people to be able to do what we can do just because they are in the same job.
He quote’s examples of managers who were ready to fire someone before simply remembering what they were like when they first started in work. The point he makes is; behaving like this is not a good way to increase your income. It actually ends up costing you more because people end up leaving and you need to replace them.
So if you see someone in your team struggling then simply say something like, ‘I remember when I had to learn XXXX I found it difficult. Then I found when I did YYYY it helped.’ They will then often pick up on that and follow up on that technique.
