The Courage To Be a Leader Like Attila The Hun

Hi welcome back, glad you found the Blog interesting enough to come back, if you subscribed to my RSS that way you will get told when I post straight away. Andrew Peel

Home Internet businesses are about leadership if you want to succeed. Leadership takes courage, here’s why?

How to develop courage in home Internet businesses

I have already given a given a brief overview of the qualities required to be a Leader as outlined in the cult book, Leadership Secrets of Attila The Hun,by Wess Roberts.

What home Internet businesses need when people say you need to be a Leader is concrete advice. If you come into a legitimate home based businesses then you will be expected to be a Leader if you really want to succeed.

Let’s take the example of someone who is working in their opportunity as a part-time job how do they develop courage? Well interestingly enough the simple decision to start your own business shows you have courage. Many people dream about starting their own and that’s all they do – ‘dream’.

Dreaming is what ignites successful people to begin their journey, however it’s the people who take massive action who will succeed.

So how do you develop courage? Many people think that courage is just an innate quality some people have and other people lack. Nothing could be further from the truth. Winston Churchill once said, “Success is the ability to go from one failure to another without any loss in enthusiasm”.

Therefore courage is a mindset as opposed to some inherited ability. The only way to develop courage is to act and carry out whatever you have planned. If you get unexpected outcomes, including failure, you must analyse what happened and continue.

Each time you do this your confidence will improve and as your confidence improves so will your courage. Directly related to courage is the willingness to accept risks that come along. However accepting unnecessary risks is foolhardy as opposed to courage.

The best way to develop courage in a home business

We have seen that courage improves with confidence. In home Internet businesses is to have a supportive environment, at the same time having the chance to be a Leader.

This is why direct sales is an ideal environment for people looking for ways to earn extra money. Legitimate opportunities will have someone who is your Sponsor, the person who introduces you to the business. They also have other people they have sponsored in. This team will have people who excel at different things.

Work with this team and identify ways to improve any weaknesses you have identified. This will improve your confidence, and you will then maintain the courage needed to continue even when you fail.

Home Internet Businesses: Do you have loyalty?

Some forms of home Internet businesses have been compared to ‘tribes’. The reason for this is that in either a network marketing or direct sales business model you have your own home based internet business. You run your own legitimate business and to be successful you are looking to do two things:

  1. Sell products that are of value to your customer in their own right as I do
  2. Of those people whom you sell to you will be looking to attract people to join you as business associates

This is because by doing the second thing other people are moving out of the ‘wage system’ where Robert Kiyosaki says you will never be truly wealthy into the ‘business owner system’ where the wealthy are.

Your work at home Internet job means you need to have a key Leadership skill, loyalty. In this case I mean loyalty to your team to start with. If you are disloyal you will loose their trust and the team will fracture and break up.

Having a disagreement within your team is healthy as conflict when handled correctly can generate creative solutions. Disloyalty is where someone challenges the team leader for their position. In many home Internet businesses you will find certain people who become top producers break away and in effect form their own ‘tribe’. This is a sensible move because if you are performing at the same level as your Leader or higher then you have earned the right to become a Leader.

So remember to your first Leadership skill is to demonstrate loyalty to your Leader, when you do this your team members will be loyal to you. They look to you as a role model and will take their cue from you on how to behave.

For this reason you can see that education is a key part of running a home Internet business and when assessing one you should thoroughly examine the level of training and continuing personal development they provide.

Work From Home Careers: The 17 Top Leadership Qualities Part 2

This is the second in a two part series on the Leadership qualities required in work from home careers.

Leadership in a work from home company

Wess Roberts, author of the best selling, Leadership Secrets of Attila The Hun identified the 17 qualities required in a Leader. You home business is essentially a work from home company because you own a business. To be successful you need to be a Leader therefore identifying these qualities and developing any areas where you feel you are weak. In the last post I identified the first eight of these qualities. Below are the remaining nine:

  1. Timing – This is a crucial Leadership skill, knowing when to act and when not to act. There is no formula for this, this can only be gained through failure. This is why it the top people in work from home careers say they ‘fail their way to the top’.
  2. Competitiveness – All Leaders must have an intrinsic desire to win. This means winning the important battles as opposed to winning at all costs.
  3. Accountability – This means accepting responsibility for all failures and successes that occur on ‘your watch’ and avoiding blaming others and external circumstances.
  4. Self-confidence – This is achieved by being in a business opportunity that trains and supports you to meet the challenges you will face.
  5. Responsibility – Leadership is about seeing that things which need to be done are done. This is as opposed to getting involved in the detailed running of an associate’s business. You only direct them to resources and support them in their use.
  6. Credibility – This is about having the intelligence to know where to go for information and advice and be able to pass that information on to others.
  7. Tenacity – True Leaders persist even through disappointment, deception and even people leaving you. Persistence will see you through to the completion of the most difficult challenges.
  8. Dependability – Leaders have to be depended upon to do the right thing in all situations. This has a strong link to business ethics.
  9. Stewardship – This is a caretaker like quality where you encourage others to develop leadership qualities. Once you have enough competent Leaders in your business then you can really reap the benefits of your labour.

The 17 Top Leadership Qualities – Part 1

Work from home careers in direct sales work best when you use ‘leverage’. Leverage is simply the term for being able to get income from work done by others. This article explains the qualities needed.

Leadership in work from home careers

In 1985 Wess Roberts Ph.D. wrote a management classic Leadership Secrets of Attila The Hun, which became a New York Times Best Seller.

He uses the documented life of Attila The Hun as an allegory for the secret to Leadership. In a work from home company the idea of ‘leverage’ is key. Leverage is what makes a business a business as opposed to being self-employed. Leverage is an income stream that is based on the work of others and which would continue even if you personally stopped work. To do this you need to have systems and leadership.

Wess Roberts identified 17 qualities that are required in all true Leaders:

  1. Loyalty – Loyalty comes first because this is what will foster trust in your business associates. There is a distinction between disloyalty and disagreement. Disagreement based on what someone believes is best for the team should be listened to. Disloyalty is disruptive and needs to be dealt with as quickly as possible.
  2. Courage – This quality is needed for a Leader to continue in the face of any challenges. It also means you must be able to excel in times of difficulty and times of prosperity.
  3. Desire – All writers on success agree desire is key to success. The same goes for Leadership. You need a strong desire to influencing people and outcomes. You are in the business of influencing people to become business associates, if they fail to detect desire in you it is unlikely they will follow you.
  4. Emotional Stamina – This is the ability to recover from disappointment, having a clear perspective and the emotional strength to persist in the face of difficulty.
  5. Physical Stamina – This is about being as fit as you can be as opposed to some ideal of what a body should look like. For example I as a disabled entrepreneur will never be able to use all the equipment in a gym and at times I am unable to exercise. However I do exercise on a daily basis in some form.
  6. Empathy – This is the ability to see a situation from another person’s perspective. Empathy should never be confused with sympathy.
  7. Decisiveness – All Leaders have to be able to make decisions quickly if needed by weighing all the facts and deciding on a course of action.
  8. Anticipation – This is learning by observation and experience. It is what enables you to decide the level of risk you should take.

Work from home careers and the secret of patience

People in work from home careers need to develop patience. This is a hard lesson for many. The question is why is it important?

Work from home careers and keeping patience

Anyone considering work from home careers has to have a Leadership mindset. The many people ask is, ‘What does this mean’?

25 years ago I was a wages clerk in local government in the UK. My section manager was frankly intolerable even by standards back then. He would throw the phone across the room, yell at people and shall we say political correctness was a blank to him.

At that point I decided that I would be a Manager and treat people correctly. I was told I would never do it. I had three strikes against me, I was disabled and there were no disabled Senior Managers, I was 27 and people waited until Section Heads retired before being promoted and no one had ever left the Payroll Section to become a Senior Manager.

Went to the local college and got my Business Studies qualification and I watched how managers I considered to be good managers behaved. I also read the One Minute Manager books over several times. Four years later I had my opportunity and took it. The UK government decided to change its local taxation. A Section Head post was advertised and I applied, I got the post moved up four pay grades and became Manager of a Section of 100 at aged 34. I was the youngest, highest paid disabled employee in my organization.

Works from home careers are no different. You first have to make the decision to become a Leader then develop the skills required to lead and then wait for the right opportunity.

Home Internet Businesses:Do you really know your niche?

One of the first things you need to decide in home Internet businesses is your niche market. So do you know what a niche is and how to define it?

The best home based Internet business must have a niche

A niche is simply a term for a segment of the market, and the best home based Internet business must have one. Why? Put simply because there are too many people starting up home Internet businesses each day for you to take them all on.

Starting a Blog or a website is a start, albeit a good start, however it is the first step on a journey to success. Every successful business has it’s own ‘why’? Remember never to confuse your business opportunity’s ‘why’ with your ‘why’. To be successful you have to portray yourself as a Leader. Every successful Leader has had a ‘why’ a clear vision of why they have become one. Becoming a Leader is a decision you make, no one will make you a Leader in the world of business ownership. It’s a mindset and you have to have the confidence to carry it out.

Deciding your ‘why’ makes it clear to you why you have decided to run a business. Your why should be greater than say,”to become financially free” because that is a result. Your why is what you believe you have to offer to other people when they join you in your home Internet businesses.

So a why might be, “to offer business opportunities to people as a way out of unemployment or the threat of it”, this may be too big so you could add “in the UK” or [your state/city]. So now do a Google search, ‘business opportunities for unemployed in UK’. If you found far too many hits you would have to keep redefining your niche until your number sites is at a level where you think you can compete.

The reason for needing a niche is so you can ‘carve out your bit of the Internet’ and look to dominate it for Internet traffic. So the question is do you really know your niche?

How to use experiences as one of the ways to earn extra money

There are several ways to earn extra money to grow your home business. Have you considered using experiences?

How does using experiences make extra money at your home business?

As an Internet Marketer you will be looking for various ways to make extra money at your home business. One of the most powerful ways to earn extra money is the use of experiences.

When people experience something new first hand it can completely change their ideas about that product or service. It is your job to make sure that experience is a positive one. This is because people’s views and ideas about any service or product are emotionally driven.

These emotions can come from anywhere and you will be unaware of where they came from. For example you may have someone who is thinking of becoming a business associate however they ask for lots of facts and figures. If you are more of an ideas person then you may find it difficult to relate to this person.

In the end your personality types may be so different that you personally may struggle getting the facts and figures etc. However, if you know someone in your organization who is a facts and figures person or you know where to get them then you can use them to create an experience.

They may be focused on facts and figures because someone has told them all online business is untrustworthy. You know there are legitimate home businesses therefore you need to demonstrate the legitimacy of your business. So asking questions why they are interested in facts and figures may reveal different emotions that are acting as a barrier to someone joining you.

Hold back on judging views about making money at home

The key is to avoid assuming you know why they are putting up any objections. Just ask open questions and listen. They should do most of the talking and you should be listening and picking up emotional phrases and never interrupt.

Having picked up on the emotions address them in an emotional way, avoid rationalizing them. In other words if they say, “I am worried about starting a home Internet business” respond by saying something like, “I understand why you are worried it’s a significant step, what in particular are you worried about?”

In this way you are building a relationship of trust and trusting someone is an emotional experience as opposed to a logical choice.

So in conclusion if you remember your market is made up of emotional decision makers you can prepare the appropriate ethical emotional response to develop a relationship of trust. Remember we buy things from people we Know, Like and Trust.

Home Internet Businesses: What’s The Spock Effect?

Home Internet businesses and the marketplace operate in an irrational manner. So what is the Spock effect?

Home Internet business ideas run on emotions

As an Internet Marketer (or prospective Internet Marketer) you will be looking for people to join your home internet business. As we have seen in this series of posts if there is one thing we can predict it’s that people will use lots of things other than logic and reason to choose to join you.

This is what I have come to term, the ‘Spock effect’ when talking to friends about the subject of behavioral economics. The reason I use the term is to demonstrate to people we make most of our decisions based on emotions as opposed to logic. Furthermore it’s now possible to prove we consistently make poor choices over and over and it’s possible to predict which choice people will go for in different situations.

So why Spock? Well it’s because the character of Spock in Star Trek ™ makes all his choices based on logic and reason and yet we find  him a strange character. He looks like us (apart from slightly pointy ears), talks like us but behaves completely differently. If we really did behave rationally all the time, then why do the crew refer to him as ‘cold blooded and calculating’?

The reason is of course we instinctively know we make nearly all our decisions based on emotions, and like to fool ourselves they were rational. They may be rational to us, however they may appear equally irrational to other people.

This is the key lesson people running home Internet businesses need to take from this series. Play to people’s emotions in an ethical way. So remember you are marketing yourself and you have to make yourself an attractive proposition. Attraction marketing works on so many levels other than simply attractive in a superficial way.

I will be exploring attraction marketing in my next series. So look out for more information on how to apply what we have demonstrated about people’s emotion driven behavior in a work at home Internet job.
