Having a work from home career means finishing

Another aspect of The Slight Edge is that of ‘completion’ or finishing. What this essentially means is that in order to keep moving forward you need as much advantage as possible. To be successful, including in work from home careers, you need to practice completion to get this advantage. The advantage of completing is that you reduce the amount of weight dragging you down.

Pick one thing a day and do it

In home Internet businesses completion means finishing what you have started. We all have things that we mean to ‘get around to’. The list itself can be quite daunting in many cases. I have heard colleagues say they are overwhelmed by the amount of information they get on how to run a home business.

The important thing to remember is this quote, ‘eat your elephant one bite at a time’. Being successful and staying on the path is just the same. You need to pick one thing and just decide to finish it. The key thing is that you pick something you know you can finish in a day.

Making things lighter increases momentum

Earning extra income will rely on this discipline as it is what will see you through the first few months in your business. As your skill in one area develops you will be able to do those things quicker. Blogging for example, your first post may take an hour, then after a few they take 20 minutes to write. Now you can complete that daily post so much quicker you can then move on to another thing to complete on a daily basis. So this continual process of completing things lightens the load, helps maintain momentum and keeping on the success path is steadily easier.

Home Internet businesses on the move

In the last post I talked about ‘mastery’ and this means getting on the path and staying the course. In home Internet businesses the ‘staying the course’ part can be easy to start but lets be clear, it can be difficult to stay on. Why is this so?

Momentum – remember that huge rock in Raiders of the Lost Ark?

One of the main reasons is that 19 out of 20 people are unable to do what is required to stay on the path. With so many people surrounding you who are failing that’s a lot of negativity to cope with. So what people in work from home careers need is a force that overcomes that negativity and helps them stay on the path. That force is called – momentum. Momentum is movement built up over time to the point where you become an unstoppable success.

Using the example of a lottery winner, the wealth this person gained was by dumb luck. There was no momentum involved. Because there was no process in which they learned about success almost all of them spend themselves back to the level of income they had before they won. In other words successful ways to earn extra money involve gaining momentum. You gain momentum by those minute by minute choices to do the right thing. When becoming successful this way people tend stay successful because their momentum is built up step by step over time and is related to their own ‘optimal rate of growth’.

You will grow and succeed at your own rate if you stay on the path

In his book The Fifth Discipline Dr Senge points out that all systems, including humans, have an optimal rate of growth, this is less than the fastest rate. In fact he says growing too fast can become self-destructive. This self-destructive success can seen in many different ways all around, celebrities, sports stars – especially manufactured celebrities, and businesses that expanded too fast.

So steady daily small improvements towards success at your own ‘optimal growth’ rate will lead to you becoming a permanent success. You have to keep moving constantly towards your dreams. If you stop you have to build all that momentum up again.

Mastery in personal development

So you have started a work from home career and you have begun your personal development and you think how am I ever going to master this business?

Well I have news for you if you have started a business opportunity, and you get to the point where you have become regular improvements then you have become a ‘master’.

The key to this is to change your concept of a, ‘master’ as someone who is all knowing. This is especially the case in the areas of personal development and ways to succeed at improving your income. According to George Leonard in Mastery he gives the following quotation which I think is very powerful:

Will you be a master?

So mastery is about making the choice and then staying on the path and doing what is needed to be successful, again a simple choice just ‘to be different’.

Do you suffer from ‘no’?

In this article we will look at the two possible paths open to people in work from home careers, the ‘up path’ and the ‘down path’.

How to get on the ‘up path’ in home internet businesses

The interesting thing about getting on to the ‘up path’ – the success path – is that getting on it is easy. It’s as easy as making the choice to focus on the future. We cannot change what has happened.

The reason why so many people who are looking to earn extra income find it so difficult to go on the up path is because society conditions us to expect failure. Research has shown the average child will hear the word ‘no’ 40,000 times before age 5, yet they will hear ‘yes’ 5,000. That’s a ratio of 8 negatives to one positive.

The reason 95% of people find living their dreams so hard is they get tired of all the people saying they are unable to achieve them. These other people are actually scared they will succeed, because when they succeed the others have failed. They are doing what is easiest, trying to bring you down to their level.

Successful home Internet business owners accept full responsibility

To be successful in home Internet businesses there is a major lesson we must all learn. We are responsible for everything in our life, both good and bad. This may seem tough; however if you are going to say everything good that has happened to you is the accumulation of positive acts, then the reverse is true.

If you are in a different place from where you want to be you must own that. It’s vital you own it because if you own it you can change it.

In this article I will explore the myth that to be a success in home Internet businesses you need to take a giant leap. This idea has come from the belief a lot of people have that success comes from a massive breakthrough. There are millions of people using the lottery as one of their ways to earn extra money. This is on the basis their ‘ship must come in’.

The lottery as one of the ways to earn extra money

Well here are two interesting statistics about the lottery. Over 90% of the winners are back at the income they had before winning the lottery within 5 years. Secondly, you never hear of someone who is successful winning the lottery. So the lottery is a poor route to go, because you have unearned all the money. Your ship arrived and you simply are prey to every piece of bad advice going and end up spending your money because you still have an ‘employee mindset’. After all that’s what you do now you earn your salary and spend your money, you are never taught the importance of investment.

Successful people have learned the importance of investment to achieve success. So rather than spend that £1 twice a week on the lottery they would think why not just put it in a savings account? In a year that’s £104 without interest, guaranteed. How many millions of lottery players are a guaranteed £104 better off by simply doing nothing but making an easy choice?

Home Internet businesses and miracles

One of my favorite quotes in the The Slight Edge is from the film Bruce Almighty where Morgan Freeman (playing God) says to Jim Carey, “You want a miracle? Be the miracle”. I have read that several times and it’s so true. There are no miracles waiting for you, you are a miracle because you made it this far.

If all this sounds boring for work from home careers, remember the book the Millionaire Next Door by T J Stanley and W D Danko? It was a best seller because it pointed out how ordinary so many millionaires are you would fail to realise you are living next door to one. Ordinary maybe, however think how dramatically they have improved their lives by simple choices over the years.

Ways to earn extra money start with a penny

In our discussion of The Slight Edge in previous articles we have mentioned that great things can be achieved by small incremental changes. The same is true of ways to earn extra money and achieve financial freedom.

What most people miss is there has to be a beginning. This beginning is often so small it seems invisible. One of the best known examples of, ‘being a penny’, is Rosa Parks. Rosa Parks got on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama; she was so tired she decided to sit on a seat for ‘whites only’. Then she was threatened with arrest if she stayed. She was arrested and this led to the forming of the civil rights movement. As part of that movement the Montgomery Improvement Association was formed and Martin Luther King Jr. was elected its first leader. Where would civil rights for a whole range of minorities be but for Rosa Parks’ simple choice in December 1955?

Work from home careers need to focus on the detail

Another thing to consider in a home Internet businesses is that the details are where you should often focus. You may miss making a critical choice by ignoring those details. For example when writing a Blog about your business you should include key word phrases as ‘tags’. These ‘tags’ enable Google to find your post. However it’s late and you do the post and ignore the tags. At the time doesn’t seem any big choice. However it just so happens that post is one of the best you have written. However how many people miss that post and the chance to be a customer over say 3 months because you chose to omit the tags?

As a final thought work from home careers need Leaders who understand the following quote from Jeff Olsen, “Greatness is always in the moment of the decision“.

What’s the best use of time?

In this series on success we have seen how time is a theme that runs throughout. It’s something all successful people realize is fundamental. They know it’s never too late to start but always too late to wait. Or as the proverb goes, ‘Why put off until tomorrow what you can do today?’

Work from home careers in constant motion

These sayings are found in many ancient writings and apply to work from home careers just as much as any other career. What they are all sayings is that time is constantly flowing. Therefore you are constantly in motion. Your future is completely in your control because the only thing that is real is, ‘now’. Once again we see the link between ancient spiritual writings and modern day quantum physics. Quantum physics says there is one thing over which there is no certainty; the future, there are just possible futures constantly flowing towards you. Simply imagine you are on a raft on a river which branches into a new river instantly based on your choice or failure to make a choice. Then it branches again and again for as long as you live.

Now remember all those points on the river you have you have no control over. All you can do is learn from any mistakes you made. Dwelling in the past will lead to permanent failure.

It’s all about choices in home Internet businesses

What does this mean for home Internet businesses? Well it means you simply need to do one thing in order to succeed. You have to make one choice. To decide you will do what is necessary to succeed. Then simply keep doing that, have patience and you will have no choice but to be a success.

If you want to improve in all your areas, including getting extra income, understanding there is only ever ‘now’ is the most important lesson. Everything else flows from that realization, because you realize the choices are easy. If you focus on ‘now’ all you can do is make easy choices, you have no time to worry about past mistakes. Just make sure it’s the right choices.

Success in home Internet businesses is easy to do easy to avoid

Notice I said in the title ‘easy to do’ as opposed to ‘easy to achieve’. There is a good reason why 95% of work from home careers end within 5 years. They end because 19 in 20 people lack the ability to keep making the correct choice.

The invisible results boost to work from home careers

The even stranger thing is that the right choice is easy. However the reason people stop is because it’s even easier to avoid the right choice. The payback comes later, how much later depends on what you are setting out to achieve and how much time you have to devote to it. However there is one absolute truth, payback will come.

For ways to earn extra money you need to ensure that the payback is positive. It’s referred to as ‘invisible results’. They are invisible because you take a small action and the next day the world looks the same. So your logical brain tells you the effort failed. However this is never the case because the time between you taking the action and the next day is simply too short to see a result. You have to essentially have faith in your decisions and the ‘invisible results’ will pile up. Then one day you will achieve you goal and wonder, ‘When did that happen? ‘

The easy ways to earn extra money or the even easier ones to miss

An actual example will prove the point. In order to improve in business you will need to learn new skills. A good way to do this is by reading books. So I suggest you start with The Richest Man in Babylon by George S. Clason, its 144 pages long. If you say OK I am going to sit down and read it chances are you will give up some way through or fail to take it all in; because concentrating that long is hard. However let’s now say I suggest you read 10 pages a day. It will take you 10.5 days to read it and the chances have dramatically increased you will do it. How many books do you think you can read at 10 pages a day in a year? Between 12 and 24 books all related to improving your business skills. You have now just set yourself on the path to success.

Does philosophy lead to ways to earn real income?

Some people say the reason successful people are successful is because they have a positive attitude. I have never been comfortable with this explanation. Neither should you, if you are looking for ways to increase your income.

So what about the attitude of those in home Internet businesses?

The reason is attitudes are essentially our current collection of thoughts. One day you may wake up with a ‘positive attitude’ feeling ready to go. The next day you may get some awful personal news, are you still going to have a ‘positive attitude’?

Jeff Olsen author of The Slight Edge argues, I believe convincingly, there is a process before a positive attitude and that is your philosophy. Your philosophy is made up of your values, beliefs and feelings about life. They are rooted in your emotions. In fact even though we like to think we make rational decision all the time we make them based on our philosophy, our ‘outlook on life’. So in the example above it’s the person who carries on despite feeling ‘negative’ who will be a success. That’s the secret.

It is believed there are two basic outlooks on life, ‘value based’ and ‘entitlement based’. To be successful in home Internet businesses you have to adopt a ‘value based’ outlook.

Other authors also argue a very similar point, Mike Dillard in Magnetic Sponsoring talks about attracting people to you as a leader by offering them value. A value based person looks at a situation and says, ‘What can I do to improve or add value to this situation?’ An entitlement based person would say, ‘What will you give me before I improve this situation?’

Work from home careers and success

Another key to a successful attitude is to understand the importance of patience. Patience is what leads to success. Olsen argues what many people see as an overnight success, is actually the result of lots of consistent small decisions. Those decisions were a process because being a success in a work from home career is a journey.
