If one of your New Year’s resolutions was to look at ways to earn extra money then a home Internet business is a good opportunity to investigate. By way of helping you keep to this year’s resolutions I want to pass on a tip I will be using to help keep mine.

Success is about more than money

All successful people agree that they were successful because they wanted to do something with their life. They wanted their life to mean something before they left this world. They then set about achieving those goals and as a result they got rich. Several of the people interviewed by Richard St. John, himself very successful said they would happily pay someone to do what they were now doing they enjoyed it that much.

So ask yourself this question, “What do I want my life to mean?”

Then write down your dream life as if it has happened, really see it in your minds eye, write down what you will have to give up to achieve that, write a plan to start you on the path to success, lastly write down one simple thing you will do each day to get there.

Now you have written it down it’s real. You have something to work with.

Next do the same for the following areas of your life:

  1. Health – because good health is important to success if you want to enjoy it
  2. Personal development – remember for your business to grow you have to grow
  3. Relationships – What good is success if when it comes to the end no one cares who your were?
  4. Finances – we all would like some extra income

Read them every day

Now you have a final discipline, you have to take those written statements out every day and read and visualize them. Keep them in your thoughts when you are making your daily choices. They will act as your guide on the path to success and help you avoid the wrong choices.

Three aspects to learning

There are three aspects to learning in work from home careers:

  1. Book Smart (includes audio books and educational video)
  2. Street Smart
  3. Learning by association

Book smarts help you increase your profits

By book smarts I mean you have to focus on formal learning. It is advised you read at least 10 pages a day of books that will help you develop in your business area and your life in general. Napoleon Hill in his book Think and Grow Rich interviewed many millionaires. They all agreed your way to earning extra money is limited by your personal growth. So you have to grow faster than your business in order for your business to keep growing.

Street smarts in home Internet businesses

In legitimate home Internet businesses there is usually a lot to learn at first, so you have to work at it. Persistence is one of the 8 attributes of successful people I identified in a previous post. The best analogy I have is a game of football. The points on the board while the game is in play is called the score. It indicates how well you are doing while you are acting. You look at the score and if what you are doing is winning you keep doing it or improve further. If you are loosing you look at what you have been doing and correct any mistakes. It’s a rhythm of continuously, ‘plan, do, review’.

It’s called the result when the game is over. In the case of a business the ‘game length’ can be a  financial quarter, six months or a year thats when you look at results. On a day to day basis focus on the score and act to win.

Profitable home businesses are linked to people you associate with

Many studies have shown that our income is roughly the same as the five closest people we regularly associate with. Why? Because we are comfortable in such a group, ‘birds of a feather flock together’ is truer than many people realize. Now bear in mind you want to be in the 5% success club. Who would it be best to spend more time with, your friends or people who are at the level you want to be?

You guessed it, you have to associate with successful people, talk to them and see what they did and overcame to be successful. Use them as a role model. This is about who you spend time with as opposed to making judgements about your friends. Tipping the balance towards meeting and exchanging ideas with successful people will make a significant difference to your success.

The power of reflection

In my continuing discussion of success in work from home careers today I want to cover the power of reflection. The Slight Edge philosophy focuses on ‘the now’, about realizing there is only ever really now. The choices we make in each moment are what lead to the path of success.

How to reflect on your home Internet business

Reflection  is about using the results you have been getting, taking time out to look at them on a daily basis, and then seeing if your home Internet business is heading towards success. The key is to remember to avoid dwelling on the past. If you use reflection that fact you did something wrong several times means you can learn. In fact you have learned, you have learned several things to change. You then have the power to choose to change the actions you take and reflect again. This is a continuous improvement process, ‘plan, do. review’.

Remember to avoid blame if you want to earn extra income

The key to reflection is to avoid the blame game. You took action which is more than 19 in 20 people did, so celebrate that fact. Welcome to the 5% club. Now you have gained membership take daily steps, based on results you collect every day, that will keep you on the success path. As I mentioned in a previous post there are two basic ways to earn extra money, the wage system and the profit system. If you persist in doing the right things, the profit system will work for you as opposed to you working for someone else and hoping for a change.

What have I done?

A method of ensuring you do reflect on a daily is to create a daily ‘What have I done?’ list. In this list you put down the actions you took to move your life forward towards success. Then look at the list and see if there is just one thing you could do better, for example such as how you handle email. As we have said such small changes on a daily basis will lead to a breakthrough.

How to create invisible profits

There are two systems in which you can be successful; the wage system and the profit system. As you are a visitor to this Blog I am assuming you are interested in home Internet businesses, which is the ‘profit system’. What is special about these types of internet based businesses? They are usually either Multi-Level Marketing (MLM), Network Marketing and Direct Sales.

The problem with the wage system

Out of interest the only truly successful people in the wage system are Sports Superstars. So unless you can play tennis like Roger Federer the profit system is the only system where you can make money for yourself instead of, ‘the boss’, and where you can control your future.

MLM is hard work for small paychecks

As ways to earn extra money on the Internet of the three mentioned above I would venture MLM has attracted most criticism. The main problem with MLM’s is it is possible to make money fast however they miss an important element the other two have. This is called the ‘invisible profit system’. Also many MLM’s do never sell an actual useful product or service. They simply rely on recruiting more people. This can only go on for so long, people loose interest and ‘drop out’ so you have to keep recruiting.

What is the invisible profit system? Put simply it is profit you receive for work or sales you have not directly made. You are not aware of the level of this profit yet it keeps arriving every month (which is when most network marketing and direct sales companies pay out). They arrive as a natural result of the network marketing or direct sales business models.

Network marketing and direct sales are perfectly respectable work from home careers. They have existed in the modern era since at least the 1920’s. However the business model goes back to at least biblical times, when large merchants would allocate routes to traders on which to sell their goods.

Why was this a good system then and now? Well quite simply the ‘trader’ or distributor was able to distribute the goods of the merchant (company) without having to store the goods or have shipping costs themselves. All they had to do was believe in the product and then take them to markets and sell them. As they became more successful people became interested in their goods and became business associates working for the trader. This was based on an agreement the new business associate would pay the original trader a portion of his profit.

There you have the reason why so many wealthy people are now endorsing direct sales as a recession proof form of new business. Warren Buffet one of the most successful investors in the world has invested in several direct sales organizations, as have other wealthy investors such as Robert Kiyosaki.

Once you have built a legitimate direct sales organization you gain commission on your direct sales, and a percentage of the commissions of the organization you have built. Invisible profits are also known as leverage. It is leverage because your ‘reach’ has been extended by the efforts of the people in your organization.

  1. Father Christmas’ reindeer’s are Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner/Donder, Blitzen, and Rudolph. 8 of the names come from Clement C. Moore’s Book ‘A Visit From St. Nicholas’ and I am sure you know which song that last one is from.
  2. There have only been 7 white Christmases in England in the 20th Century. Definition of a white Christmas in England is that a snowflake falls on the roof of the London Weather Centre in the 24 hours of 25 December.
  3. An old wives tale says that bread baked on Christmas Eve will never go mouldy.
  4. The Christmas Turkey was imported by the Jesuits and in some dialects is called ‘Jesuite’
  5. Christmas pudding was first made as a kind of thick soup with raisin and wine in it

How to get into good habits

Habits are very good things or are very bad things. For home Internet businesses they should be good things if you are going to be a success. The thing about habits whether they good or bad it’s very difficult to overcome them. Why is this?

How habits drive us

Habits are driven by your subconscious, which is basically your outlook on life and is emotion based. Your outlook creates your attitude, actions and your results and in the end is your life. So it follows if you are going to be a success you have to have good habits. And each bad habit adds to the negativity you are carrying round. The ability to be successful basically boils down to simple choices in order to earn extra money. Your choices are yours to control, we all know what the correct choice is in most situations.

The issue is why do we make the wrong ones? It’s because often it’s easier to go with our bad habit than to stop, think and make the right choice. The good news is when we keep making the right choice it becomes a good habit.

Changing bad habits

So how do people in work from home careers develop good habits? The answer is ‘awareness’. We must first become aware of our habits before we can change them. So practice becoming aware of your habits. When you are in the shop and pick up the chocolate bar instead of the piece of fruit for your snack ask yourself, is this helping me on the path to better health? Then pick up the piece of fruit instead, and remind yourself this is your first step on the path to a healthy lifestyle. This will result in a new better habits being formed.

You will be unable to change all your bad habits overnight, however being aware of them enables you to know which ones to focus on.
