Orders never work well in work from home careers

In his classic work How to Win Friends and Influence People, Dale Carnegie explains one of his principles that giving orders is a poor way to get people to do something.

In management theory the issuing of orders to get people to do something is called the, ‘command and control’ method. As you can guess it has its roots in military organizations. However interestingly even they are moving away from its pure form. People who have home Internet businesses getting people to join them, may adopt this way of managing their network because it’s the easiest and quickest way for them to lead.

Research has shown that as we live in a democracy people expect more say over their working live. Indeed the attraction of working for yourself is you have fired the boss. If they then have someone issue orders or directions they may actually feel like leaving.

So what is the alternative, especially of you really want to get your message home? Well although it takes longer; asking questions and getting input to questions you lay out will actually get you more trust as a Leader. A trusted Leader gets more commitment and more loyalty, a better way to earn more money.

So if you want to create set methods you wish your team operate then put out proposals and ask for input. Make it clear as Leader you retain the right to ignore some suggestions as its people’s businesses that are on the line. To engender even more trust make sure you give feedback to people if you ignore their advice explaining why.

Mentioning your own mistakes can help

When you first start in a work from home career things can be overwhelming. This is especially true if you have never worked for yourself before.

When you become successful in a direct sales home internet opportunity you will be inviting other people to become business associates. Those people who join will be looking to you for leadership.

The business opportunity I am associated with has formal recognition of leadership levels. The key to effective leadership of people who are new to an ‘organisation’ is to; remember what was what like for you when you first joined.

In How to Win Friends and Influence People, (HTWFAIP) Dale Carnegie reminds us that we probably made mistakes when we first started in any form of work. As we become experienced we tend to forget this because we have become competent. We then tend to expect people to be able to do what we can do just because they are in the same job.

He quote’s examples of managers who were ready to fire someone before simply remembering what they were like when they first started in work. The point he makes is; behaving like this is not a good way to increase your income. It actually ends up costing you more because people end up leaving and you need to replace them.

So if you see someone in your team struggling then simply say something like, ‘I remember when I had to learn XXXX I found it difficult. Then I found when I did YYYY it helped.’ They will then often pick up on that and follow up on that technique.

And beats but every time

Dale Carnegie in How to Win Friends and Influence People, (HTWFAIP) has some powerful principles on leadership for those involved in work from home careers such as direct sales.

Let’s examine the team or network aspect of direct sales further. In your successful home internet opportunity you will have a team/network all of whom are at different levels of experience in marketing.

The thing that binds them is they have all seen this opportunity as a way to earn extra money. They are also business owners so they are looking to fire their current boss. If you simply step in to that ‘Boss’ role and point out their mistakes directly you will generate resistance. Carnegie has already told us resistance is the key reason people fail to take on constructive criticism.

The biggest culprit in this failure to take on board feedback is the word ‘but’. In our personal lives how many of us have said to our partner something like, ‘ I really enjoyed that meal you made but next time it could do with a little more spice’? The ‘but’ implies you did not really mean anything you said before the ‘but’, it’s really as simple as that.

A much more empowering way to draw attention to a mistake to someone according to Carnegie is to banish ‘but’ from your feedback and replace it with ‘and’. The turns the above example into, ‘I really enjoyed that meal and I was wondering whether it could stand some extra spice, what do you think?’

I guarantee the second way would start a discussion about the meal and how spicy both of you would like it. This diplomatic way of calling attention to a problem will yield results and keep the trust of your business associate.

When to use the good news bad news sandwich

This week I am covering Dale Carnegie on Leadership from his classic How to Win Friends and Influence People (HTWFAIP).

In a home internet opportunity such as direct sales the strength of the business model comes from three things:

  1. Get Paid Today – You get paid commission for the person who becomes a business associate when their qualifying payment is received. No waiting for monthly commission checks for your first sales.
  2. Business owner – You are selling valuable products produced by someone else and you are your own business owner and enjoy the associated benefits
  3. Teams – This is the ‘network’ aspect. It is in my best interest to ensure anyone who joins me follows the training provided and I support them if they have questions. We operate as a team all aiming to earn extra income

There may be an occasion when you see a team member simply doing something that has to be corrected for their own good. This is termed constructive criticism and its aim is to help the person develop. The way in which you handle giving this feedback can make or break any trust you have.

A good recognized technique is the ‘good news, bad news’ sandwich technique. This involves starting by pointing out the good work the person already does, then you mention the thing you have noticed you want correcting and can ask what they think? You will often find the person is aware of the problem but is unaware of how to correct it. This is where you step in and suggest an alternative approach. It is vital you end the conversation by re-enforcing they are a valued member of the team. This technique makes it clear you are commenting on the behavior you would like correcting by stressing to the person has other qualities you value.

A challenge can help your work from home career

One of the things that work from home careers may appear to lack is an immediate challenge. It’s easy to ’slack off’ or blame external factors. In his book, How to Win Friends and Influence People (HTWFAIP), Dale Carnegie gives several examples of where successful people have used challenges to improve performance.

This principle is about the desire we all have to excel, to be good at something. Herzberg came up with the, Two-factor theory of motivation which Carnegie mentions. It’s called the Two-factor theory because according to Herzberg two sets of different factors affect whether you view your work positively; Motivators and Hygiene Factors. The interesting thing is that Hygiene Factors; status, job security, salary, fringe benefits, company policies, supervisory practices and wages/salary fail to improve job satisfaction if improved. Whereas if Motivators; challenging work, recognition, achievement and personal growth are increased they will all improve job satisfaction and performance.

It explains why the CEO of my business opportunity left his job selling mufflers to take the chance on becoming a successful entrepreneur. It’s the reason all entrepreneurs start up and the reason they may stop. You are either up for a challenge or you are not.

I have found most people are up for a challenge when given the correct encouragement and support. Some people I have managed have blossomed; one even became one of my bosses in my day job. It’s also why I enjoyed mentoring, because you can bring out the best in people without forcing the issue.

In a home Internet opportunity, especially direct sales, you have to be a Leader. The business opportunity I have has recognized this and rewards Leaders and has Leadership Levels to aspire for with awards. If it works for Hollywood it will work for you

In the continuing series of advice from Dale Carnegie’s, How to Win Friends and Influence People, this post covers the use of dramatization in work from home careers.

He points out many of his students reported to the class one of the ways to make extra money is to use dramatic examples. In a home internet opportunity it is possible to use the same techniques as Hollywood and TV.

Essentially both of them use story telling or, drama, as a way of getting across their message. Becoming an entrepreneur is the only way to achieve true financial freedom. A report issued last year said that most of the foreclosures in the USA  would have been prevented by the person having just an extra $250 a month.

Imagine those people had full-time jobs and many had worked for years yet could not get the extra $250 to prevent them losing their home. One of the key things wealthy people realise is it is essential to have multiple sources of income.

Work from home careers are a good way to be involved in a worthy effort

In this series of posts on Dale Carnegie’s How to Win Friends and Influence People, (HTWFAIP) he reminds us that some people’s hidden desires are driven by what he calls, ‘nobler motives’.

By this he means that some people want ways to earn extra money in order to either contribute to a worthy cause, actually set up an organization to make a difference or have the financial freedom to volunteer.

I think he is reminding us that whilst it’s true most people would like extra money, we should avoid assuming they want the wealth for purely selfish reasons.

Work from home careers fit in with the desire to do worthy activities. Bob Proctor, Robert Kiyosaki, and Donald Trump have all said they know of no other form of business where you can start at very low cost and earn more than a heart surgeon.

The key to success in a home internet opportunity is marketing. If you simply enter a home business without being trained you will really struggle. The question is where do you get the training to give you the financial freedom to do the wonderful things you want to do?

Something we would all like

The series of posts I have been doing on, How to Win Friends and Influence People (HTWFAIP) have a common thread. That thread revolves around placing yourself as a person with a home internet business opportunity in your client’s position.

Today’s post talks specifically about how sympathy can assist you. According to Wikipedia; “Sympathy is a social affinity in which one person stands with another person, closely understanding his or her feelings”. However I wonder if empathy may be closer to what he goes on to describe as an approach. Going to Wikipedia; “Empathy, which literally translates as ‘in feeling’, is the capability to share and understand another person’s emotions and feelings. It is often characterized as the ability to ‘put oneself into another person’s shoes’”.

In a work from home career you will meet people who have reasons they are unable to run a home business. The facts are that the people who have been successful range from a muffler salesman to a cardio surgeon. However if I feel I am incapable of running a home business as a way of earning extra money those examples will not convince me.

Note I used the word ‘feel’ above, because we are emotional beings. So for you to help me see how a home business in direct sales would help me gain financial freedom you have to take my concerns seriously. If I believe you are not taking my feelings seriously I will not be open to change. It’s referred to as ‘emotional intelligence’, and is a helpful skill to develop. We all like someone to understand how we feel about something.

Why would someone have a work from home career?

Dale Carnegie in How to Win Friends and Influence People (HTWFAIP) describes this approach as, ‘a formula that will work wonders for you’. In a work from home career something like that has to be worth thinking about.

Essentially he argues that, if you know a work from home career is a good way for someone to earn extra money, if their opinion is different then try to understand why they have that believe. It boils down to the old adage of, ‘walking a mile in the other person’s shoes’ to understand what drives them.

A work from home career has to be your idea

Ideas are the most powerful things in the universe. Everything that has ever been created was once an idea. Einstein said, ‘imagination is more powerful than knowledge’. Therefore if you are an ideas person a work from home career may well be an ideal way to earn extra money.

This is because according to Dale Carnegie in How to Win Friends and Influence People he points out that trying to sell a something to someone is an uphill struggle. You have set yourself the task of convincing someone to drop their ideas and agree to yours.

I have been trained in attraction marketing. I am assuming you are reading this Blog because you are somewhat interested in working from home and gaining financial freedom. That being the case one of the things that may be holding you back is the idea you are not a good sales person. Well if we consider this for a moment that may make you an ideal candidate.

You are more likely to be comfortable attracting people to your business. There is now a huge body of evidence we buy from people we like and trust. To get person who holds an idea you believe to be untrue to like and trust you, avoid telling them straight out you think their idea is wrong.

A far more powerful approach is to present your ideas and leave it for them to consider. Also be clear you are prepared to be open and accept you may be wrong. In this way if they accept the idea the idea becomes theirs and they will be more likely to act on it. Your role then becomes one of helping them to come to a decision.
