Just how linked are you?

Most people in internet marketing know about Facebook and MySpace as potential areas to market their products and services, how many of you are members of the granddaddy of social networks – Linkedin?

Originally seen as a place for professionals to meet and look for career opportunities or swap ideas for professional development it is changing. It is not as easy to master as other social networks but is worth the effort. The average income of people on Linkedin is is over $100k, has a global audience of 23M.

Built upon trusted connections and relationships, LinkedIn has established the world’s largest and most powerful business network, with members from all five hundred of the Fortune 500 companies, as well as a wide range of household names in technology, financial services, media, consumer packaged goods, entertainment, fashion, and numerous other industries. LinkedIn is backed by world-class investors including Sequoia Capital, Greylock Partners, the European Founders Fund, Bessemer Venture Partners, Bain Capital Ventures and now Goldman Sachs, The McGraw-Hill Companies, and SAP Ventures.

They also allow a form of targeted pay per impressions advertising so you can aim you campaign at a very specific demographic and they have a small business package.

The thing to remember about Linkedin is it is very ‘group centric’. To get an established reputation you have to join groups in your area of interest. The first thing I would do is join groups and ‘listen’. See what kind of questions are being asked and then work out how you can offer advice or how to’s. The most powerful thing you can get from Linked in are testimonials and these are an essential part of your marketing strategy. You should have a page of your Blog solely for testimonials and ensure you use them in any printed literature. The best way to get testimonials is to give them to people you think add value or have helped you, or who you have worked with in the past.

So while Facebook may be the big daddy on the block make sure you are a member of the granddaddy as well if you are a serious network marketer. Feel free to link with me at http://www.linkedin.com/in/apeel.

Lightning over Catatumbo River Venezuela

The folks in the video aren’t watching a fireworks show but rather the near-constant lightning strikes that occur over Vaenezuela’s Catatumbo River almost half of the year. Apparently, sailors have dubbed the lightning “Maracaibo Beacon” because it can be used as a navigational aid. According to the excellent Atlas Obscura, there might be as many as 280 strikes per hour during 10 hour stretches.

(The phenomenon) was first written about in the 1597 poem “The Dragontea” by Lope de Vega. De Vega tells of Sir Francis Drake’s 1595 attempt to take the city of Maracaibo by night, only to have his plans foiled when the lightning storm’s flashes gave away his position to the city’s defenders.

Extra income working from home

You may have read posts about how to start an online business. Everything here will help you can start making money. However, you have to consider that businesses will have to succeed and last for a long time. So, here are some income strategies focused on the internet. With these tips, you will be able to make more money from the internet more effectively.

First of all, quality of your services should always be your top priority. If you only give good quality service at the beginning of your business and then just to do the same thing over and over again, your business will not develop and improve.

You have to remember that people are never satisfied. Because of this, you need to find innovative ways to keep your old customers loyal and at the same time attract new customers. As Einstein said ‘If you always do the same thing you will always get the same results’.

By making the quality of your products and services better and better, you can be sure that more people will buy your products or service and you will remain competitive.

Another money making strategy you should always remember is that you have to have a range of things to sell. For example, if your online business is about selling articles, then try selling a variety of articles. This means that you shouldn’t only sell articles with one specific topic you should also offer selling articles with different topics.

Make sure your website looks professional. To make it look even more legitimate and professional, add your own logo, have a page of customer testimonials and become a member of a trade association. For example you will see from this page I am a Founder Member of the Association of Betternetworkers which has a Code of Conduct I must abide by. People can click on the badge to verify I am a member and I receive training to ensure I continue to develop as an online marketer. This demonstrates you are a leader and you will attract more people to buy products and services from you will be considered to be more trustworthy.

Although some people thinks that logos are a waste of time, you have to consider the fact that people looks for this type of thing as it will assure them that the company is legitimate.

Reaching out to more people is another strategy that can help you make more money in your online business. Advertise as much as you can. Get people to subscribe in your Blog, and once you have their contact information, always send them newsletters about your online business and the new products you are offering.

These are some ways of improving your income strategies from the internet. With these few tips you can be sure that you will go a long way to earning more money from your online business and make it more successful.

Your Boss IS Watching You – The Proof

Excellent post on Mashable by Jennifer Van Grove

“We all know that employers are getting savvy to social networking sites and the information we share online. But what you may not know is that a recently conducted survey shows that nearly 1 in 2 companies are doing their online due diligence for prospective job candidates.

This according to research firm Harris Interactive, who was commissioned by CareerBuilder.com and surveyed 2,667 HR professionals, finding that 45% of them use social networking sites to research job candidates, with an additional 11% planning to implement social media screening in the very near future.

According to the study, “thirty-five percent of employers reported they have found content on social networking sites that caused them not to hire the candidate.” The big lessons you can learn are quite obvious, but bear repeating. Provocative photos and info are a bad idea (53% of employers won’t hire you), shared content with booze and drugs is also highly dangerous (44% dismissed candidates for this reason), and bad-mouthing former employers is very risky behavior (35% reported this a the main reason they didn’t hire a candidate).

We also think it interesting that emoticons, those friendly smiley faces you see everywhere, are actually big no-nos in direct communication. 14% of surveyed employers disregard candidates for that single lapse in judgment alone.

Though this may seem as a big downer for those of us who are oversharers, the reality is that there’s still opportunity to use your social presence to land that job. The survey also found that, “eighteen percent of employers reported they have found content on social networking sites that caused them to hire the candidate.”

So remember what you put on the social web stays on the social web. Use Perry Belcher’s ‘Mum Rule’ – ‘would I say this to my Mum?’. Only now switch it to ‘would I say this to my Boss?’.

Things To Avoid When Writing a Headline

Came across another (as usual) great post from copyblogger about headline writing. I have to say this is an area where I have problems starting in both my posts and my articles. Mine always seem boring. A piece of advice I got recently was write your headlines like a ‘thriller writer’. That helped but this post by Jonathan Morrow is the ‘real juice’ and I will follow it’s advice.

He lists 12 things to do when writing headlines:

  1. Avoid being original -  I had to do a double take when I saw this. Basically what he is really saying is broaden your resource material. You should as a writer keep a ‘rip off’ file. This is where you see a great piece or headline and ‘rip it off’ – I just cut and paste good headlines then play around with them. I have not done this consistently enough so I will be doing this more consistently. Do this until you get a real feel for a good headline and you can then be original.
  2. Stand out – Look at what other Blogger and article writers are doing in your niche. I they are writing mainly short pieces do a long piece and vice versa. Or mix it up.
  3. Avoid being clever – Clear, direct headlines beat clever funny ones every time.
  4. Be satisfied – Is your headline smacking of desperate attention or does it command attention. Aim for the latter.
  5. Think about your readers – Always craft your headline around what your readers are interested in. This should be based on know the topics your readers are interested in.
  6. Remember your peers – If you want to get links you have to impress other bloggers operating in your niche. After thinking about your readers consider your peers
  7. Remember social media – If you are looking for traffic from the main social media sites remember that audience as well. You need to think about your target social media audience when you write your headline – i.e. from the beginning.
  8. Remember your personal style – Fit your headline with your personal voice. Could your reader’s look at one of your headline’s and know it was one of your pieces without clicking on it?
  9. Make up your own mind - When struggling for a headline avoid asking your friends. They are more likely to come up with clever and funny which you should avoid.
  10. Go for the magic – Jonathan says that getting a great headline is like Harry Potter getting his wand. He only picked the one that was right for him – go for the magic nothing less.
  11. Forget your failures – Remembering your failures will not help except as a learning exercise. Jonathan’s advice remember one word: next.
  12. Remember you headline is just the beginning – A great headline is a good start but it’s the opening paragraph that will carry the piece to the end.

With thanks to Jonathan Miller of copyblogger for a great original post that I have just aimed to pass on.
